The journal "Voprosy Onkologii" (Issues in Oncology) stands as the oldest oncological journal in Russia.
Distinguished scientists, who have indelibly shaped the history of Russian oncology, have contributed to the establishment and development of the journal.
The publication journey of the journal spans a decade preceding the Great Patriotic War (World War II) - from 1928 to 1938, when it was issued as a periodic scientific journal. Subsequently, it was replaced by compendiums under the same title, "Voprosy Onkologii".
The editorial board of 1928 included eminent scientists: P.A. Gertsen and N.N. Petrov, as well as A.I. Abrikosov, A.A. Krontovsky, M.I. Lifshitz, and A.V. Reprev.
The proceedings of the first All-Union Oncology Congress were published in the 1936 edition of the journal.
The journal "Voprosy Onkologii" (ISSN 0507-3758 print) embarked on its publication journey as a journal established by the Ministry of Health of the USSR in January 1955 at the initiative of Nikolay N. Petrov (1955-1962), who became its first editor-in-chief.
The editorial board of the first from January 1955 included outstanding scientists: clinicians N.N. Blokhin, A.V. Melnikov, A.I. Rakov, A.I. Savitsky, A.I. Serebrov, A.P. Shanin; pathologist M.F. Glazunov, virologist and immunologist L.A. Zilber, pathologists-experimenters R.E. Kavetsky, A.D. Timofeevsky, L.M. Shabad, epidemiologist A.V. Chaklin, and others.
N.N. Petrov was succeeded as editor-in-chief by A.I. Serebrov (1963-1979), a prominent oncogynecologist.
From 1980 to 1989, the journal was headed by oncologist-experimenter and organizer of oncological services N.P. Napalkov. Since 1990, the editor-in-chief for 32 years has been S.V. Kanaev, a renowned specialist in radiation therapy of malignant tumors and medical aspects of nuclear medicine.
Since 2022, the journal has been headed by A.M. Belyaev, a talented organizer of oncological services, director of the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology.
The journal "Voprosy Onkologii" has retained its name since its foundation. It has maintained its integrity without undergoing any mergers or divisions. Since 1990, the journal has been published bimonthly in 6 issues per year.
The journal serves as a platform for the dissemination of original experimental, clinical, and fundamental scientific works, alongside reviews, lectures, and clinical cases, with particular emphasis on addressing the most pertinent issues in oncology: pathogenesis, screening, early diagnosis of malignant neoplasms, and innovative methods for their treatment and prevention.
The high rating of the publication is ensured by the strict selection of published articles, which are reviewed and edited by leading specialists in the field. The editorial board and editorial council comprises well-known experts, including eleven academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Active cooperation in the journal with prominent scientists from Russia, the near and far abroad has formed the scientific, practical and academic foundation of the journal.

The journal provides immediate open access to its content under the Diamond Open Access model, based on the following principle: free dissemination of academic knowledge among readers - publications are fully accessible to readers free of charge, and there are no publication fees.
Recognized by the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation (HAC RF), the journal is listed among recommended peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications for the dissemination of primary scientific findings derived from dissertations. Additionally, it is indexed in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI), Web of Science, the Russian Science Citation Index Core (RINС), Scopus, and other prestigious databases. In accordance with the recommendations of the HAC RF, journals featured in the RSCI list and international databases, including Scopus, are accorded the status of Category K1 publications.
