Abstract

Introduction. Capsular contracture (CC) is the most frequent and clinically significant complication in both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer, requiring repeated surgery in most cases. Currently, studies are being conducted to determine indications for the prevention and conservative treatment of capsular contractures.

Materials and Methods. The study included 25 patients with capsular contracture grades II-III according to Baker after reconstructive plastic surgery for combined/complex treatment for breast cancer (BC), who underwent conservative treatment using botulinum toxin type A (BTA).

Results. The study included patients with an average age of 48.3 ± 0.6 years. Before the introduction of botulinum toxin type A, the capsule thickness was determined using ultrasound (US), and on average amounted to 1.94 ± 0.05 mm. The maximum number of repeated injections was 3 within 6 months. Patients who were administered BTA for stage II-III capsular contracture showed a positive effect in the form of decreased pain, decreased deformation of the reconstructed mammary gland, and after 2 months the therapeutic effect was maintained and the capsule thickness averaged 1.51±0.05 mm.

Conclusion. Injections of botulinum toxin type A may become a potential new method in the treatment of capsular contracture after reconstructive plastic surgery for breast cancer.
